Outdoor Flush Fixture

I have to install an outdoor fixture in the side of my garage, but I do not understand the instructions. Keep reading.

I guess I have to put a box of old work there to mount the bracket. I do not understand how to make this flush against the wood. Also, I have to cut the site to work installl the old box?
